Why do I need a dog harness?

Because dog collars are so popular and widely advertised, many people don't realize that small dogs, when walked, actually need dog harnesses. This is because the pulling of a collar on the trachea can cause a lot of damage.

In order to prevent this, there are several styles of harnesses depending on your needs. The first is the different materials that harness can be made out of. You can have leather, fabric, mesh, ribbon, nylon, and much more. The different types of dog harnesses are step in, figure 8, H harness, and much more.

The most popular kinds are step in dog harness and the breathable bessie and barnie harnesses.

Manners Monday

House training is this weeks Manners Monday.

With the new puppy this is definitely on my mind. I asked for some of the best secrets on our Poochieheaven Facebook Page and got some good responses. Below are the suggestions for those looking to potty train your dog.

  1. Many, many bathroom breaks then slowly spread them out to breaks that fit the schedule
  2. The most important thing I learned is NEVER get mad if your puppy has an accident. By being matter of fact when she had an accident, and just relocating her to the place she was supposed to have gone, we were able to limit the amount of accidents to just a very few. And non after the age of 7 months. Plus she isn't afraid of us and still trusts us.
  3. I always sit outside with them for a while and whenever they go potty outside they get a treat then if they do it in the house no treat and a loud noise. Usually only takes me a week to potty train them.
  4. Start as small as you can. I know that taking home is 8 weeks but as a breeder if you can find one that starts outside potty training at 4-5 weeks and sends home a schedule of when they eat sleep and potty is super. Otherwise start the moment you pick up the pup and if you have other dogs in the home they also help teach the little ones.
  5. Consistency and not giving too much freedom. If you aren't actively watching the puppy put them in their crate or exercise pen...don't give them the opportunity to have an accident.
  6. We had a "bells" system. We attached little jingly bells to a rope and hung it on the door. Whenever we took our dog out, we'd jingle the bells very loudly and when he did a potty outside, he got a treat. We continued this until he started ringing the bells on his own to go outside!
Potty training a new puppy can be a lot of work, but with the tips above from our facebook fans, hopefully it can be much easier!

Talk to Me Thursday

I recently had a customer ask is BioMedic foam on the dog couches really worth the extra cost? When we asked the designer if they were really worth the extra cost, below is the response I got.

Think of the BioMedic foam like the tempurpedic beds that are in the mall. Take 10 minutes next time you are there and relax on one. It is like nothing else. Chinese memory foam does not count, try American made or tempurpedic. You are probably going to want to buy a new bed.

Is there an added benefit:

For dogs under 10lbs, it is a minor benefit. For dogs 10-20 pounds it is a good benefit. For dogs over 20lbs it is a must.

Why the BioMedic foam is the best:

  1. The BioMedic American made memory foam is the most comfortable dog furniture available anywhere.
  2. They never wear out.
What is BioMedic foam?

It was originally developed by NASA for the space program, memory foam is the most comfortable sleep surface ever invented. The BioMedic memory foam orthopedic dog bed contours perfectly to your dog's body. It forms to your dog's exact shape providing even support and unparalleled comfort. Unlike other dog bed materials BioMedic memory foam disperses compression points that aggravate orthopedic conditions. It actually absorbs pressure instead of reflecting it back to your dog. This is perfect for older or challenged dogs, and any dog of any age appreciates the incredible comfort.

Other dog bed materials compress and compact at the points where the most weight is applied. The harder you press on these beds the more counter pressure or resistance is built up. These pressure points are why people and pets toss and turn at night to try to get away from the pressure build up and discomfort is causes. The obvious problem is that even with turning over the pressure points soon develop again. This is also why you, or your pet, wake up sore and unrested.

BioMedic orthopedic dog beds provide maximum comfort.

Poochieheaven carries many dog sofas that feature BioMedic foam.

Durable Dog Toys

Durable Dog Toys

The most common concern I hear regarding dog toys is that “my dog can destroy that in one minute”. But luckily, there are options out there for durable and long lasting toys. The two most common types are plush and rubber dog toys.

Plush Durable Dog Toys

Plush toys are destroyed much easier than even non-durable rubber toys. Fortunately there are durable plush dog toys that are made to withstand dogs that want to “kill” their toy. These toys are made with special technology such as chew guard to make the seams stronger. The seams are always the first thing to get destroyed when a dog works on a toy.

Dog destructiveness is not limited to one size dog, so the manufacturers of these tough dog toys have made toys in all sizes- from the smallest Shih Tzu puppy to the largest adult mastiff. As an added benefit for dog owners, many of these toys feature a long lasting guarantee- if your dog was to destroy the toy, you get a free replacement.

A type of durable toy that is in between plush and rubber are fire hose toys. A dog toy made out of fire hose is extremely tough for dogs to destroy and can be a great option for dogs that do not like plush or rubber toys.

Rubber Durable Dog Toys

The other type of tough dog toys is rubber type dog toys. There are many different styles and shapes of rubber toys, but one thing reigns supreme- they are long lasting and can give your dog lots of enjoyment. A thing that I find important when it comes to chew toys- especially rubber ones- is that they should be made in the USA, not in China or other unregulated countries where they can pick up some nasty chemicals that can harm your dog. The two brands of rubber durable dog toys that we carry at Poochieheaven- West Paw Design and Planet Dog- are both made in the USA. These toys also feature a replacement guarantee!

The rubber dog toys again come in many different sizes and shapes for all different types of dogs. Some also feature holes so you can add your dog’s food or favorite treat. The West Paw Design toys are made out of Zogoflex- which is non-toxic and extremely durable.

So no matter what toys your dog has destroyed in the past, at Poochieheaven we have a toy that will become your dog’s new favorite toy!

Fashion Friday

This week's Fashion Friday is more practical fashion than cute fashion.

Many small dog owners get worried about dog harnesses that while better than collars, still put too much pressure on the dog's neck and trachea. At Poochieheaven we got in some new non-choking harnesses.

They are a step-in type mesh harness that will put no pressure on your dog's trachea and thus prevent any type of damage.

They come in 10 different colors and also have a matching leash available. The Ultra Non-Choking Dog Harness in Salmon Rose is the most popular color.

Talk to Me Thursday

This weeks topic for Talk to Me Thursday: Sizing Dog Shoes

The most common item at Poochieheaven that is returned is dog shoes. 90% of the time it is because they are the wrong size. Without being able to try on shoes, it can be difficult to find the correct size pair. Below we will offer some tips on how to get the correct size dog shoe.

First: Not all sizing is the same. Look at the size chart. Just because your dog is a medium in one brand, doesn't mean they will be a medium in this brand.
Second: Not all shoes are made for all sized dogs. Look at the size chart. Many times, if you have a Labrador, those cute sandals are not going to fit. Many cute dog related items are made for small dogs.

Just these two tips will save you many problems and the hassle of returns.

After you have made sure the shoes you want will fit your dog, next is figure out the correct size of dog shoes. To find the correct size shoe, you will need to measure the bottom of your dog's paw. You will need both the width and length measurement. The best way to do this is to get a paw print on a piece of paper of your dog's paw. If you are unable to do this, then have your dog sit still and measure your dog's actual paw.

After you have your dog's paw measurement, you will need to compare this to the size charts on each dog shoe's page. You want to get the size that is closest to your dog's size, but you want to go larger rather than smaller. If the best size is almost too large, then it would be best to get a pair of dog socks to wear along with the shoes to make your dog's paw slightly larger.

Tasty Tuesday

This week's Tasty Tuesday will talk about The Wholistic Pet supplements. The Wholistic Pet offers a wide variety of supplements to keep your dog healthy.
  • Wholistic Canine Complete
  • Wholistic Run Free
  • Salmon Oil
  • WholeCran Intense
  • Diatomaceous Earth
Those are just a few of the many different types of The Wholistic Pet supplements we carry at Poochieheaven. We got to talk to the owners of The Wholistic Pet at a trade show and were very impressed by both the knowledge of the owners and the products they make. The Wholistic Pet is used by many dogs in the show ring to look their very best. The owners have been involved in the show world for 30 years and they were sick of feeding chemical laden supplements to their dog and wanted to use more all-natural, made in the USA items.

They have a wide variety of items that can help with any aliment your dog may have.

Feline’s Pride Issues Nationwide Recall of its Natural Chicken Formula Cat Food Due to Salmonella Contamination

Shelby Gomas,
Tel: 1-716-580-3096

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 1, 2010 - Buffalo, NY – Feline’s Pride is announcing a voluntary recall of Feline’s Pride Raw food with ground bone for cats and kittens, Natural Chicken Formula, Net Wt. 2.5 lbs. (1.13 kg., 40 oz.) produced on 6/10/10, because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. People handling raw pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the raw pet food or any surfaces exposed to the product.

When consumed by humans, Salmonella can cause an infection, salmonellosis. The symptoms of salmonellosis include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, minimal diarrhea, fever, and headache. Certain vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly susceptible to acquiring salmonellosis from such pet food products and may experience more severe symptoms.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product is packaged in uncoded plastic containers and sold frozen to private consumers nationwide. Once thawed, the pet food has a shelf life of about 1 week. The firm manufactures the pet food by an as-ordered basis. This recall affects only those orders placed and shipped from June 10 through June 17, 2010.

The firm and FDA are investigating this matter to determine the source of this problem, and will take any additional steps necessary to protect the public health.

To date, both the firm and the FDA have received no reports of Salmonella infection relating to this product.

This product should not be fed to pets but should instead be disposed of in a safe manner (e.g., in a securely covered trash receptacle). People who are experiencing the symptoms of Salmonella infection after having handled the pet food product should seek medical attention, and report their use of the product and illness to the nearest FDA office.

People should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the pet food – especially those made from raw animal protein such as meat or fish -- to help prevent infection. People may risk bacterial infection not only by handling pet foods, but by contact with pets or surfaces exposed to these foods, so it is important that they thoroughly wash their hands with hot water and soap.

Since certain vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly at risk from exposure they should avoid handling this product.

Consumers with questions should contact the company at (716) 580-3096, Monday –Friday from 10 am - 4 pm EDT.
