Talk to Me Thursday
Talk to Me Thursday is a new feature on Poochieheaven's blog. It is when we will discuss a question we have gotten at Poochieheaven. This may be about one of our products, dog care, or just anything in general. If you would like to have one of your questions answers, please email it to info@poochieheaven.com and put Talk to Me Thursday in the subject line.
One of the most common questions I get regarding our dog carriers is are they airline approved?
Normally all I can answer is, it depends. While there are some features that can make a carrier airline approved such as a certain size, hard bottom, ventilation, etc. It truly all depends on what airline you are flying.
Depending on the airline, some won't even allow dogs in the cabin, some require a certain length, a certain height, etc.
What I always suggest to make sure the one you want is an airline approved dog carrier is to first find out what airline you are flying and then second, take a look at their carrier requirements and then compare that to the features of the carrier.
Some of the more popular dog carriers that are known to work on airlines are
Kwigy Bo Carriers
Sherpa (has some that are guaranteed to work with certain airlines)
Pet Flys Carriers
Petote Carriers
These are just some examples, many more are airline approved, but it is best to check with your airline to make sure.
You can go to this list to find out restrictions on all the airlines.

Tasty Tuesday
Tasty Tuesday is a feature on Poochieheaven's blog that will discuss tasty things for your dog.
What does your dog eat?
I am no where near an expert when it comes to food, but because of the line of work I am in, I get to read about dog nutrition a lot! When I got Duke over 5 years ago, I knew a little bit about dog food and I knew that feeding him Ol' Roy from Wal-Mart was not a good thing. I didn't know a lot, so I went into the local dog food store and picked out a brand that wasn't something I had heard of before (no Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, etc), assuming that because it was a little more expensive, it was better. I ended up choosing Canidae, which really wasn't that bad of a choice. As I got into Poochieheaven and learning more about dog nutrition- I switched brands a few times. One of the problems I had with Duke is the fact that he is an EXTREMELY picky eater. He really doesn't like food or treats.
As the years went by, I finally got him to like a variety of the Fromm foods and a variety of the EVO from Natura foods. During this time, I also learned more and more about the raw diet and was really interested in it, but do to space issues and freezer it just wasn't possible.
After hearing about the Natura buyout to Proctor and Gamble, I decided that I was going to make the leap to a raw diet. Since Duke eats a little over 2lbs of food a day, I knew that feeding a pre-packaged raw diet would get to be too expensive, so I looked into a prey model raw (basically make your own).
I currently feed him a prey model raw diet and am extremely happy with it.
I will discuss more about it as the posts come.
See picture of Duke eating a buffalo tongue.

Manners Monday
Manners Monday is a new feature on Poochieheaven's blog where we will discuss different manners that make living with your pet easier. If you have anything you would like discussed, email info@poochieheaven.com with your comments.
My favorite command.
One of my all time favorite commands that make living with Duke much easier is the command "bed".
For those that crate their dog, it can be an extension of the "go to your crate" command. I really like this command because whether he is in trouble, annoying me, or waiting to get a really good treat, all I have to say is "bed" and he goes to his bed and lays down (or sit if he is really excited).
How to do:
1. Make sure your dog knows what their bed is. Start by taking them to their bed and saying "good boy, lay on your bed" or when they are laying on their bed, gives them treats and praise them more for laying on their bed.
2. After they know that their bed, is there bed, start with lots of good situations to have them go on their bed. Before giving them their night time treat, have them go to their bed and wait. Before going for walks, have them go to their bed and wait and put their leash on their.
3. After they have successfully gotten down the "bed" command for a treat or other positive reward, try working in the command where they don't always get a positive reward. Make it every other time, then once every four times, etc. This way they come to do the command without always expecting a treat.
4. Finally the last step is to use the "bed" command when it is not something good. I use the bed command when Duke is doing something naughty, when I need to vacuum and he gets in the way, or when people come over who are not as dog friendly as others.
Again, I love this command because it works so well in many different situations.

Himalayan Dog Chews
Many people realize that rawhide is bad for dogs, but they are tired of giving their dogs bully sticks and deer antler chews. Another option that your dog can use are Himalayan dog chews.
What are Himalayan Dog Chews?
They come from an ancient recipe of the people of the Himalayas. The people used them as a snack while working in the fields. They are 100% natural and contain yak and cow milk, salt, and lime juice. There are no chemical or preservatives. They are long lasting and offer the prefect alternative to bully sticks and deer antler chews. They come in three different sizes, so all dogs can enjoy them.
Frequently asked questions about Himalayan Dog Chews.
Isn't milk bad for dogs? At time raw milk can be difficult for dogs to digest, but once it is made into cheese, the proteins are altered and make it more easily digested. Many times people are encouraged to use small pieces of cheese for training. Additional because these are long lasting chews, the amount digested at one time is minimal. About 10% of dogs experience loose stools or gas the first time they use this product.
Isn't salt bad for dogs? The amount of salt is very small and is used as a flavor enhancer, not as the flavor itself.
What happens if my dog swallows a large piece? These chews are fully digestible, so there should not be any issues.
Where are they made? They are bought directly from framers in rural community co-ops of the Himalayas.
What size should I give my dog? No size is too large, you can always give larger chews to smaller dogs without any problems. The small Himalayan Chews are good for dogs under 20lbs, the medium Himalayan Chews are for dogs 20-55lbs, and the large Himalayan Chews are for dogs bigger than 55lbs. For those dogs are that very aggressive chewers, they should be given the largest size and observed when first given the chew.

Harness or Collar for my Small Dog?
You are ready to bring home your new small dog or puppy and are wondering what you should get to walk them with. Unlike large dogs, small dogs should not wear collar when going on walks because of the damage it can do to their trachea. Dog harnesses are much more safe and there is not need to worry about damage to their trachea.
There are so many different types of dog harnesses, so no matter your needs are, you will find one that suits them.

Bessie & Barnie Sofa Bed
I LOVE Bessie & Barnie Dog Beds. Duke has two of them in the bagel shape and I've been wanting one for Jax, but he isn't a big fan of laying on actual dog beds, so I didn't want to get one and have it sitting around without being used.
Jax does like laying on furniture though- couches, chairs, etc. Bessie & Barnie has a sofa bed option that I thought I would try.
1. It is furniture like- which he enjoys sleeping on and wrestling with his mice in.
2. It would look super cute in the living, so even if he doesn't use it, it will still look nice (FYI: He is currently sleeping on the couch, next to me while I type...)
So far we have had to for 3 days. He has slept in it a handful of times and has played with his mice in it a handful of time.
The thing I love about Bessie and Barnie beds is the fact that they are available in sooo many different colors and designs. They have one to match your home decor no matter what it is. My favorite fabric is the rosebud fur. They are extremely soft. They are also made in the USA, so buy purchasing one, you are keeping jobs in the USA and do not need to worry about toxins from China.
